SHP Football Opens with a Loss
Saturday October 3, Seton Hall Prep suffered its first loss to Delbarton 24-7. Senior Delbarton Quarterback Cole Freeman threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the Green Wave secure the victory. Freeman went 8/17 for 109 yards and ran for 46 yards on 11 attempts; he found Nick Petrillo and Dylan Hayes for the two scores in the air. For the Pirates, quarterback Jaden Craig completed eight of his twenty-four attempts for 65 yards. Backup quarterback Brady O’Sullivan went 10/15 for 102 yards.
On the ground, Myles Thomason led the Pirates with 57 yards, and Aidan Papantonis led the Green Wave with 68. PJ Penders held the only score of the game for the Pirates with a 6-yard wildcat run. The game turned away from Seton Hall Prep after PJ Penders returned a kickoff for a touchdown but was brought back for a hold on the play. This penalty continued to hurt the Pirates as later that drive a muffed punt gave Delbarton outstanding field position inside SHP’s 25-yard line, a position on which they later capitalized.
As the Pirates were driving inside the red zone on the 14-yard line, a tipped pass caused an interception by defensive lineman Matt Gemma turned the tide for the game. Although the offense struggled, the defense looked sound as PJ Penders recorded an interception; Matt Monteleone recovered a fumble; Jackson Collins led the defense with 12 tackles, and Declan Kazan and Jack Larsen both had a sack each.
