Mr. Falconer is the newest theology teacher at Seton Hall, having joined just this year. However, his connections with the Prep run deep, with his son Jacob, being a Seton Hall student in the class of 2026. Currently, Mr. Falconer teaches Junior Theology, focusing on Catholic Morality and Social Teaching with his students.
Mr. Falconer came to The Prep while he was looking for a new school and Seton Hall was searching for a new theology teacher. Another important reason for his arrival was his son’s great experience at Seton Hall. Mr. Falconer also wanted to try a new learning environment due to The Prep being all-boys to see how he would adapt to a different type of school.
Mr. Falconer’s main goal at The Prep is to give everything he can for his students at the school. He wants to be a guide for students both academically and spiritually, recognizing the young men he teaches today will be the nation’s future. Mr. Falconer also appreciates that The Prep is a unique school, and he wants to help students work toward the high standards of the school.
Mr. Falconer finds The Prep to be a special school compared to the previous ones he has worked at and praised the school’s high level of academics, such as a Mark Twain lecture given a few weeks ago. Mr. Falconer cannot imagine many other schools which have the opportunities The Prep offers its students. To Mr. Falconer, The Prep is a uniquely rigorous and academically challenging place, which he appreciates.
Mr. Falconer has taught for over twenty years across the United States and the United Kingdom, with ten years in each. In London, Mr. Falconer taught at Catholic schools which mirrored the environment he was raised in in the UK. In the United States, he has worked throughout the Catholic school system teaching theology. Before teaching, he played music and worked in finance, but he felt teaching would be more fulfilling. Mr. Falconer has found teaching to be a great career, appreciating how many people it takes to teach one person and his role in that process.
Mr. Falconer believes his personal philosophy of giving everything for his students will be the most influential thing he can bring into the classroom. In addition, his previous experiences give him more to teach with, such as his background in the arts and theater, which he wants to use as an interactive teaching method. Mr. Falconer thinks learning should be experiential and should come from the heart, especially in fields like theology, where book knowledge is only a part of the education. Mr. Falconer believes that God is the greatest artist, so to try to understand religion, it may be helpful to understand art.
Mr. Falconer would like to add that he truly wants to work for and with students because he recognizes that students at Seton Hall want to learn since they have chosen to go here. He thinks this situation is quite special, since most public schools have a mixture of students who are motivated and are not, whereas The Prep’s students have an interest in learning. He also finds SHP to be the most college-like school he has seen in the US, given its academic rigor and structure. Finally, Mr. Falconer truly hopes for all his students to have as enjoyable and enriching a learning experience as he has.
Overall, Mr. Falconer is a great addition to The Prep’s teaching staff, incorporating his unique background into his teaching style. He embodies what it means to be a Prep teacher: dedicated, passionate, and motivated by the learning of his students.
