As the school year approaches its halfway point, it marks the beginning of preparation for one of the school’s largest arts events: the spring musical. This year’s production is The Wedding Singer, a musical that debuted in 2006 and is filled with references to and music from the 1980s.
To learn more about this year’s musical, I talked to Mr. Martinez ’11, the director of the musical. On the topic of why he chose The Wedding Singer, Mr. Martinez said that he tries to prioritize as much participation as he can get from the entire cast of the play to maximize actor’s abilities to be seen and act on stage. In addition, Mr. Martinez thinks his pick of a more modern show will help to keep the momentum that he has seen in the theatre department since Covid. One of Mr. Martinez’s main goals for the play is to keep doing what he loves with people who share his passion for theatre. In addition, he wants to provide the entire school community with the best show possible to deepen the community’s appreciation for the performers.
Mr. Martinez also highlighted that there are plenty of opportunities to be involved in the musical besides acting. Stage directors are a great option for those who are good at organizing, while the backstage crew has a variety of options for any interest. Anyone who wants to learn about audio or visual controls has a great opportunity to join the tech crew, which gives members invaluable experience with coordinating the technological side of the play. Mr. Martinez said that one of the best interests those trying out can have is wanting to be in a community, noting that theatre allowed him to find his own place in the school. Mr. Martinez also remarked that anyone who thinks he may have a creative ability but has not used it should try out for the play, since it is a great way to open your artistic talents. Auditions for the play took place January 21 or 22 in Room 137, with an additional dance audition on January 25. You can also help the musical by attending it from May 8-10 in the Auditorium.
