Seton Hall Prep is rich in opportunities for students to serve the local West Orange community, Essex County community, and beyond. There is perhaps no better opportunity, though, than Seton Hall Prep’s Elementary School Tutoring Program to give back and serve a deserving community.
This program connects Seton Hall Prep students with elementary school children from two local parochial schools: Holy Trinity School in Westfield and Our Lady of Sorrows School in South Orange, creating a unique bond between tutor and student. Through the program, Seton Hall Prep students not only help younger children with academic tasks ranging from spelling to advanced arithmetic, but also become role models and mentors. It offers an enriching experience that goes beyond the classroom, allowing for Seton Hall Prep students to develop leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
As a program coordinator for the last three years, I had the privilege of working closely with our teacher representative, Mr. John Pascal, and the principals of the two local elementary schools. Together, we coordinated sessions and matched high school tutors with students, ensuring a personal connection between them. The program operates twice a week, with each elementary school being tutored on individual days, with Seton Hall Prep tutors attending sessions on either Mondays and Thursdays to guide and support their young pupils.
Each tutoring session begins at 3:30. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, all tutoring has been done online. The tutors are sent their child’s homework prior to each session, and they use the hour and a half session to cover the homework provided, work on any additional work the student might have, and often just talk with the student about school, sports, and hobbies.
In addition to the tutoring sessions, I represented the program at various school events, including back-to-school nights, where I gave speeches to large audiences about the program’s benefits and how it fosters community engagement. Being the liaison between tutors and students/families, I ensured communication ran smoothly and that all needs were met. I also provided on-site support during tutoring days to assist tutors with any challenges they faced.
The impact of this program is felt not only by the elementary school students, who gain invaluable academic help and mentorship, but also by the Seton Hall Prep students. Tutors gain a sense of responsibility and fulfillment, knowing they are making a real difference in the lives of younger students.
The Elementary School Tutoring Program at Seton Hall Prep is truly a unique opportunity, fostering a sense of community, leadership, and service among its participants. For those looking to make a meaningful impact while gaining valuable experience, it’s an opportunity that should not be missed.
