Mr. Gibbs has a special place in Seton Hall Prep history, as the second highest points scorer on the basketball team of all time, second only to his youngest brother TJ. Since he has been inducted into the SHP Hall of Fame for his basketball talent, it should be no surprise that he is The Prep’s newest basketball coach. In addition, Mr. Gibbs works in the LAP department and counsels students from all different backgrounds.
Mr. Gibbs’ story began in Scotch Plains, where he and his brothers played football growing up. The Gibbs are an athletic family, with all three brothers playing Power 5 basketball and a father who played Division 1 football at Temple in the old Big East conference. When his oldest brother started playing basketball at The Prep, Mr. Gibbs was inspired and decided to go to The Prep. He led a remarkable high school basketball career, representing the US at international competitions in Argentina and Singapore, along with breaking the points record at SHP. Mr. Gibbs feels that The Prep helped to broaden his worldview through the diversity of people he met at school.
For college, Mr. Gibbs originally intended to go to the University of Maryland but later moved to the University of Texas for his freshman year. Next, he went to Seton Hall University for three years, and got a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Connecticut. After graduating, Mr. Gibbs played in several top-level European basketball leagues. His favorite place to play was Slovenia, since he felt he was able to fully enjoy the country while there.
Mr. Gibbs’ goal for this year is to improve the basketball team and for his students and players to have fun. Upon returning to The Prep, Mr. Gibbs recognized many teachers and staff who were at SHP when he attended. For example, his own basketball coach here, Mr. Bob Farell (who’s since moved on from coaching), is still part time in the Physical Education Department. One difference between the past and present SHP is the resources available to students, such as LAP.
Mr. Gibbs’ favorite SHP moments were his sophomore victory against Saint Peter’s Prep along with silent night games. Mr. Gibbs’ advice for all students and players is to work hard, create a routine, and enjoy the moment.
