March Madness is finally here. With the official bracket out, it’s time for thousands of college basketball fans to ponder the same question: Is this the year I make a perfect bracket? I must confess, I am among these “delusional” people. Every year I think, could this be my year? Of course, it never has, and quite frankly, it likely never will. According to the NCAA themselves, the odds of filling out a perfect NCAA bracket are about 1 in 9223372036854775808. Read that number again, 1 in 9223372036854775808! You would have to pick the winner for all 63 games. I’m sure you’ve heard someone say a statement along the lines of, “Just pick the higher seed in every matchup;” real March Madness fans laugh at this suggestion.
Anything can happen in March. This tournament can be summed up in one word, and that’s “crazy.” Lower seeds upset higher seeds all the time. To this effect, Warren Buffet offers a billion dollars annually to anyone who creates a perfect bracket. Is the task impossible? In my opinion, no — March is the time where the impossible somehow becomes possible. So go ahead and make your perfect bracket. Maybe we can share Mr. Buffet’s billion dollars.
