Pirates Finish Regular Season with Loss to St. Peter’s
Seton Hall Prep looked to finish the regular season on a positive note with a win against rival Saint Peter’s Prep. Last year, the Pirates faced the Marauders twice, once in the regular season and again in the playoffs. The Marauders won both games by a single point.
Seton Hall moved the ball well on the first drive but was unsuccessful on a 4th and five pass attempt. Next, Quarterback Champ Long drove Saint Peter’s down the field and scored on a 5-yard run. The Prep responded with a field goal and a defensive stop. Mike Dunmore’24 put the Pirates ahead with a 20-yard touchdown run. However, Saint Peter’s took back the lead with a 23-yard touchdown catch by Hassan Moore. Saint Peter’s led at the half, 16-9.
Both teams played stellar defense in the 3rd quarter resulting in no scores in the 3rd. Coach Fitzgerald’s squad was not backing down; Liam Londergan ’24 scored on a designed run from the nine-yard line, breaking numerous tackles, to tie the game at 16-16. SHP had all the momentum after stopping Saint Peter’s on 1st and 2nd down, forcing a 3rd and 15. However, Champ Long found the open man and connected with Hassan Moore for a 52-yard touchdown.
The Pirates retained the ball down eight points with two minutes on the clock. Londergan led the Pirates down to Saint Peter’s red zone. However, on a 4th and five on Saint Peter’s 20-yard line, the Marauders forced an incompletion resulting in a turnover on downs. Saint Peter’s defeated the Pirates 24-16. In the last three years, each SHP vs. SPP game has ended in a one-possession game. In 2020, Seton Hall defeated Saint Peter’s by one point in overtime. In 2021, Peters beat the Prep twice by one point, and in 2022 Saint Peter’s was victorious by one score.
