SHP Football Loses to St. Joe’s Montvale
October was a difficult month for the Pirates as they lost two consecutive games. However, Coach Fitzgerald’s team hoped to win their final regular season game at the KAC vs. powerhouse Saint Joesph’s Montvale.
Saint Joesph’s high-powered offense scored on the game’s first drive; Joey Gatson found Nathan Baliey for 54 yards and a score. The Prep answered with Jack Catchpole ’24 connecting on a 38-yard field goal and their defense stood tall as Saint Joesph’s could not score the rest of the first half. The offense answered with a touchdown as Liam Londergan ’24 threw cross-body to connect with Casey O’Sullivan ’24 for a five-yard score. The Prep lead 10-7 at halftime.
The Pirate’s offense extended the lead, with Brody Davis ’23 catching a three-yard touchdown. However, Saint Joesph’s woke up quickly.
Behind the running of top running back Yasin Willis, the Green Knights answered with Willis scoring from the one-yard line. The Green Knights capitalized after a special team turnover as Joey Gatson ran a read-option for 62-yard touchdown to put the Green Knights ahead 21-17.
The Pirates’ offense stalled in a close game during the 4th corner. The Green Knights used their momentum to score again, extending the lead by eleven. The Prep defense needed a stop on 3rd down to keep the game in reach, but Yasin Willis had other plans as he ran in a 37-yard touchdown. Saint Joe’s ended the game with a pick-six, resulting in a 42-17 win.
This is a prime example of a score not reflecting a team’s overall performance as SHP was leading late in the 3rd quarter.
