Football Bests State Champ Red Bank Catholic
Seton Hall Prep entered their fifth game of the season with a record of 3-1 and ranked inside the top 10 of NJ football rankings. Under the lights, the Pirates faced a Shore Conference powerhouse and defending state champions, Red Bank Catholic.
The Prep started firing in the first quarter, with the offense moving the ball downfield quickly. Cornerback Darren Burton ’23 scored on an end-around run on the eight-yard line to put the Pirates on the board, leading 7-0. The offense struggled to move the ball in the first half after the opening score, but the defense held strong, not allowing any points in the first half by RBC; the Prep entered halftime leading 7-0. Coach Fitzgerald’s offense was able to get inside the red zone, but RBC’s defense held their own and forced a Prep 33-yard field goal attempt that Jack Catchpole ’24 connected on. The Pirates’ defenses continued their dominance and the RBC Caseys could not advance the ball on offense. In the 4th quarter, with The Prep up 10-0, Liam Londergan ’24 put the game away with a 40-yard screen pass touchdown to Andrew Daly ’23, extending the Pirates lead 17-0.
The Prep’s defense was perfect, not allowing a point on the scoreboard and only allowing Red Bank to cross midfield twice. The Pirates 17, Red Bank Catholic 0.
