As technology continues to flourish within our society, it has become an integral part of our lives. Computers and smartphones have only made it easier for us to access and utilize data. Consequently, with more students having phones, schools have begun to follow. A The Journal study concluded that an impressive 95 percent of teachers are using technology in classrooms, whether through videos or slideshows. Technology has allowed teachers to facilitate their lessons more effectively than merely using a whiteboard. Yet, technology also has an immense impact on students.

The American University School of Education explores the various outcomes of education and technology. Primarily, Covid-19 has only helped uncover the need for technology in education. Schools and teachers can communicate and teach students using tools such as Zoom, from the comfort of their homes. Not only has technology helped teaching during the crisis of Covid-19, but it has other benefits such as higher student engagement, more effective lessons, and an individualized learning environment. But technology has its downfalls. Technology in classrooms and at home increases screen time. Not only is screen time a concern, but some students who rely on school provided resources may struggle at home, where those materials are not present. Some schools cannot provide their students with laptops, or in other cases, children may have connection or Wi-Fi issues at home.

Technology is meant to assist teachers and students alike, not trouble them. There are many examples of how students and teachers are positively affected. Students now have access to widespread communication and collaboration with other classmates and teachers, such as online discussion boards. Technology allows students to contact their teachers for help any time of the day. Curiosity and engagement are enhanced by students’ use of online materials and websites.

The U.S. Department of Education weighs other aspects of proper digital uses in education. Grade books and teacher feedback is constantly updated for students so they can visualize how they are progressing in a class. Online video lectures are accessible to the student at any time if, for example, they missed class that day. Learning games and interactive websites not only boost inquisitiveness, but also allow students to become critical thinkers. These are all examples of how technology is, and is supposed to, positively impact schools.

Seton Hall Prep is a proper embodiment of these ideals. With the consistent updating of the online portal, schoolwork, grades, and other educational resources are always available. Using MYSHP, I am constantly in contact with my teachers if I need help or need to clarify a topic. My assignments are viewable in case I need to plan ahead or submit an essay that is due. Even if the portal is not working, the email and Microsoft applications prove to be just as efficient. Nowadays, almost all of my essays or homework assignments are given online as opposed to on paper because of such easy access to technology.

Schools have drastically changed because of the technology that is present in our lives. Covid-19 has bolstered our use and focus on technology in a classroom setting. As the number of students with technology increases, it is vital that schools follow suit. We should properly utilize the technology we are presented with and progress. The effects are already immense, but as technology itself continues to grow, we must acknowledge how it will continue to impact schools, teachers, and students.
