SHP Dominates St. John’s in Opener

The last time Coach Fitzgerald’s team stepped on the field they defeated the number one team in the state, Saint Peter’s Prep. However new team, new year, new expectations. In the past five years, Prep football would have one upset that would shock the state and defeat a high-ranked team. This year SHP wants to be known for a state title. This goal began with Pope John.

The first quarter started exactly how Coach Fitzgerald would want. Dominance by the defense and points on the board for his offense. Harvard commit QB Jaden Craig ’22 found Nick Dunneman ’22 and Brody Davis ’23 for touchdowns and had the play of the game. A 59-yard designed QB run touchdown gave Seton Hall a 21-0 lead. The Prep’s high-powered offense continued. Mason Mac ’23 ran a screen pass in for a 64-yard touchdown, Jahlil Bowen ’22 ran in for a 42-yard touchdown, and Craig scrambled in for his 2nd rushing touchdown of the day.

In addition, Coach Faldo’s special teams unit was unstoppable. Creating a safety after Yale Commit Kicker/Punter Nick Conforti ’22 pinned Pope John at the 1, and standout Darren Burton ’23 maneuvered through Saint John’s kicking team for a 65-yard kickoff return. Prep won 51-7. They take on Union City, September 3 at the Rumble at the Ratian.
